Snow days

On Wednesday night our kitchen pipe froze, and, when our heat tried to turn on, it started blowing cold air. We let it run for a few minutes, but noticed the temperature dropping, so we turned off the heat completely. We turned it on a few hours later, and it was blowing warm air again, so we went to bed.

Mister got up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, and noticed it was a lot colder than usual. We usually keep it at about 60* when we're sleeping, and he said it was at 54*. We live in a really windy area, and our heater does have a hard time keeping up sometimes, especially when it gets below 40* outside. I believe it was about 23* that night. I vaguely remember Mister coming in saying we may have to go to my moms in the morning.

The next morning Sweet Pea woke up at 7:30am and I did NOT want to get up! It was already too cold. I got dressed, grabbed Sweet Pea and headed to the front room. I looked at the thermostat, as this is when I usually the heat back up to 68*. This morning however, the thermostat said 39*!!! I let Mister know, and turned the heat on anyway, but set it for a lower temp, thinking the heater wouldn't have to work as hard. It quickly lowered the temperature down to 37*. Well shit. Our heater was broken.

Sweet Pea and I tried to go about our usual morning, but it didn't go so well. I put her in her cloth diaper, which she screamed through. I tried to feed her, which she only ate 3 ounces of, and then started screaming. I quickly dressed her as fast as I could in several layers of warm clothes, a fleece sleep sack, and the wrapped her in two warm blankets. She continued to scream. I then started to cry along with her. I felt so guilty. What kind of mother can't even keep the house warm? She was so cold, that she cried herself to sleep. It broke my heart.

I ended up calling my dad and asking him what we should do. He suggested flipping the circuit breaker, we did it and it worked! We turned up the heat, and it was actually semi warm air. It made it up to 43*, still too cold. So we decided to head up to my mom's house, where there was pleanty of heat. If we were going to leave we needed to leave within the hour.

I packed a bag for Sweet Pea and I, Mister showered and packed his bag. I bundled up Sweet Pea in car seat safe clothes and we were on our way. In was snowing pretty hard by the time we left, and in the 20 minutes it took to get to my mom's city, if was a little difficult to drive in. We stopped to get some hot food, then headed to my mom's house.

Parking was a small issue, she lives on a hill. So we had to park up on the street and walk down.

Walking into the house felt so good! It was so warm. Really, it was in the low 60's, but compared to our place, it was heaven.

So we're hanging out at my mom's for a few days. We've got about 7 inches of snow already, and it's falling fast and hard.

Sweet Pea had a hard time falling asleep last night, it was only her second night away from home, since she's been born! She finally fell asleep at about midnight, but still managed to wake up at 7:30am. Go figure.

Mister made homemade chicken & dumplings for dinner tonight, it was amazing. He's the cook in our house. I do the cleaning, besides dishes, and he does the cooking. I do put the dishes away though. He's also making from scratch, chocolate chip cookies with walnuts! I can't wait.

Sweet Pea and I have been talking to my mom with FaceTime, while she's out of town. My computer cord broke, for the fifth time, so I've been using her iPad. It's been a lot of fun.

**A few days have passed**

Luckily, my mom's cupboards and freezer were well stocked. Mister made chicken and dumplings, from scratch! That fed us for 2 days, and was quite delicious. He also made two batches of cookies from scratch. One chocolate chip with walnuts, and the other peanut butter with chocolate chips.

We made it home safe and sound, almost. When we got home, there was a sheet of ice all the way around the place. We immediately thought our pipe had burst. Mister went inside to check the heat, and make sure the bunnies were OK. When he came back down the stairs, he slipped and hit his head on the bottom step. Scared the shit out of me. He seems ok, just a bump on his head.

Towards the end of our stay at my mom's, we were running out of formula, we were getting really worried. We were stuffing her full of table food, as much as she would take, so we could save what little formula we had left. We ended up running out just as we were getting ready to leave for home.

My mom's house is less than baby friendly. She has one big wire that wraps all the way around the room....Sweet Pea thought this was great fun. Mommy, did not.

We didn't bring her Pack N Play, because we've never needed at home. Now I'm afraid to ever leave the house without it! We ended up having to place blankets all around the edges of the room. I even had to strap her in the bouncy seat....that lasted all of 5 minutes.

We are so glad to be home! And we would be happy if there was no more snow this winter....unless, we're fully stocked and the heater keeps working!
